Overview
Tunnel is designed with privacy in mind. We collect minimal data and never sell your personal information. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights regarding that data.
Data We Collect
Account Data
If you create an account, we collect:
- Email address (used for authentication and account recovery)
- Name (if provided via Google sign-in)
- A unique user ID to identify your account
Account creation is optional. You can use Tunnel without an account, with all data stored locally on your device.
Library Data (Synced Users)
If you sign in, your library metadata (titles, URLs, reading progress) is stored in our cloud database to enable cross-device sync. The full text content of imported articles is stored locally on your device and is not uploaded to our servers.
Data Stored Locally
The following data is stored only on your device:
- Content you import (articles, documents, text)
- Reading preferences (speed, font size, display settings)
- App settings and customizations
Analytics & Diagnostics
We collect anonymous analytics and diagnostics to improve the app:
- Crash reports and performance data (via Firebase Crashlytics)
- Anonymous usage statistics such as feature usage and reading sessions (via Firebase Analytics)
- Device identifiers for analytics purposes (not linked to your identity)
How We Use Data
Any data we collect is used solely to:
- Authenticate your account and enable cross-device sync
- Improve app stability and fix bugs
- Understand which features are most valuable to users
- Process in-app purchases (via Apple and RevenueCat)
We do not sell, share, or use your data for advertising or tracking purposes.
Third-Party Services
Tunnel uses the following third-party services:
- Clerk: For user authentication (email and Google sign-in). Subject to Clerk's privacy policy.
- Supabase: For cloud storage of library metadata when signed in. Subject to Supabase's privacy policy.
- Firebase (Google): For crash reporting (Crashlytics) and anonymous analytics. Subject to Firebase's privacy policy.
- RevenueCat: For managing in-app purchases and subscription status. Subject to RevenueCat's privacy policy.
- Apple App Store: For app distribution and payment processing. Subject to Apple's privacy policy.
- Content extraction services: When you import a URL, we may use third-party services to extract the article content. Only the URL is shared with these services.
Data Retention
Local data (content, preferences, settings) is stored on your device and removed when you delete the app. If you have an account, your library metadata is stored in our cloud database until you delete your account. Anonymous analytics data is retained for up to 2 years for trend analysis.
Your Rights
You have the right to:
- Delete all your local data by uninstalling the app
- Delete your account and all associated cloud data from within the app (Settings)
- Request information about data we may have collected
- Request deletion of any data associated with your account
Children's Privacy
Tunnel is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently collected such information, please contact us immediately.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify you of any significant changes through the app or via the App Store update notes.
